In just seven hours, buses traveling inland from Lima climb over a 4,500 meter (15,000 foot) pass on the way to the high valleys tucked deep within the Andes. By far the most spectacular area is known as the Callejon de Huaylas. The Santa Cruz valley is formed by the Cordilleras Negra and Blanca, both of which rise to over 6,000 meters (20,000 feet).
Surrounded by two huge mountain ranges, this area has many sites for the adventurous pilot. Most launches are above 4,500 meters (15,000 feet) and some are as high as 5,200 meters (over 17,000 feet!). When flying from the Cordillera Negra our view is of the beautiful, heavily glaciated Blanca Range. Sites in the Blanca Range lie deep within the mountains and are surrounded by high glaciers and magnificent peaks. Because of the extreme height of these launches it's important to allow time during the tour for proper acclimatization. |
